Following consultations with Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic on a candidate for Serbian prime minister-designate, Socialist Party of Serbia (SPS) leader Ivica Dacic said the position of the electoral ticket comprising the SPS, United Serbia, and the Greens of Serbia is to elect a new government and continue cooperation with the ruling Serbian Progressive Party (SNS).

“As you know, I said this right away, our position is that a new government should be formed because there is a stable parliamentary majority. We are absolutely against any form of government that comes to power through a coup. We believe there is no reason to have elections or to form a government that assumes power through the streets or violence,” Dacic told reporters at the Palace of Serbia after the consultations.

He said the SPS is in favor of forming a new government in accordance with the Constitution and law, but that he doesn’t know what the SNS will decide to do.

“If that is their stance, we have decided to continue our coalition with the SNS and President Vucic,” Dacic added, adding he believes this coalition has been in the interest of Serbia for all 12 years it has existed.

“Serbia shouldn’t opt for new elections, rather, it is in Serbia’s interest to continue with reforms and restore peace and order,” said Dacic.
