Danish Kentaur factory in Vranje closes, over 200 workers notified at gate

Workers at the Danish company Kentaur Balkans in the Serbian city of Vranje have lost their jobs as the factory is closing, the InfoVranjske.rs portal reported. On Monday morning, employees were stopped at the gate and denied entry, receiving notice of the factory’s closure printed on paper, without a signature or stamp.

The notice, the portal learned, was distributed by the factory manager. Initial estimates suggest that just under 300 workers employed at the factory have been made redundant.
The notice reads that the factory’s closure will proceed through liquidation.
“Unfortunately, I must inform you that a decision has been made to close the company. I take this opportunity to sincerely thank everyone who was part of this project with us,” the notice reads, adding that salaries and all compensation will be paid, “including the full October salary.”
“Unused vacation days will also be compensated. You are entitled to a monthly allowance from the National Employment Service for a period of two years. To claim this allowance, please contact the National Employment Service,” the notice says.
The workers were told that they can collect their personal belongings starting Tuesday.
Kentaur Balkans was among the first companies to operate in the Free Zone Vranje, arriving shortly after Geox, which has since also closed. Free Zone Vranje is a designated area in southern Serbia offering companies special benefits and incentives to encourage investment.
