Kosovo President Vjosa Osmani declared a one-day national mourning following the earthquakes that hit Turkey and Syria, the Anadolu agency reported.

"In the face of such tragedies, we must stand by those who need support. The pain of the Turkish and Syrian people is ours too. Therefore, based on constitutional and legal powers, as a sign of state and citizen respect, I have declared Wednesday, Feb. 8, 2023, a State Mourning Day in the Republic of Kosovo," said Osmani.

She added that Kosovo forces are already taking part in search and rescue operations but more support is available if needed.

The Kosovo government sent about 30 people from the Kosovo Security Force to Turkey late Monday night to support search and rescue efforts, reported Anadolu.

A Kosovo Government session began Wednesday with a minute of silence.

Prime Minister Albin Kurti said that Kosovo is shocked by the earthquake that struck Turkey and Syria in which over 11,000 people tragically lost their lives.

“On my behalf and on behalf of the Government of Kosovo, I express my sincere condolences to the families of the victims, who lost their loved ones. We wish the injured a speedy recovery,” said Kurti.
