Leader of the opposition Democratic Party (DS) Srdjan Milivojevic said Monday that the ruling coalition’s approval rating is in free fall, and that Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic needs to be forced to meet the protesting students’ demands and call early parliamentary elections.

In an interview with the Beta news agency, Milivojevic said that Serbia’s Prime Minister Djuro Macut should not be expected to send a reasoned proposal for the dissolution of the Serbian Parliament until President Vucic orders him to do so.
“The joystick controlling Djuro Macut is in Aleksandar Vucic’s hands. Vucic plans to call elections only when it suits him and the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) and that is why he must be overcome and forced to fulfill the students’ demand for early parliamentary elections,” Milivojevic said.
He emphasized that the Democratic Party is committed to supporting the students’ demands and will take part, as he put it, in the broad mobilization of rebellious citizens and students calling for early elections.

“The Democratic Party will never back down from the fight to achieve the students’ demands. This struggle will end with the calling of elections and the victory of a student ticket. The students have already toppled the government, improved Serbia’s image in the eyes of the international community, and done more for a free Serbia than anyone has since October 5, 2000,” Milivojevic said in the interview.
Asked if he expects elections to be called soon, the DS leader said he does not engage in “predicting the behavior” of Aleksandar Vucic and his “subordinates.”
“It is up to the students and citizens to fight for the elections to be called as soon as possible,” he stressed.
