A doctor accused of discriminating in favor of VIP patients during the pandemic has been named State Secretary of the Serbian Health Ministry.

Dr Vesna Turkulov was named to the post by the government on May 11. She headed the Infective Diseases Clinic in Novi Sad during the COVID pandemic and was accused of setting up a secret ward for VIP patients.

She was dismissed by the Vojvodina provincial government which was headed by ruling Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) official Igor Mirovic.

The decision drew the anger of the Novi Sad city authorities which were headed by fellow SNS official Igor Mirovic at the time. Mirovic’s faction managed to take control of the clinic.
