Doctors warn of repression in Serbian health care system

The letter recalled the arrests of medical staff at protests who were providing care for the injured. “If the state abuses and arrests people taking care of the injured, it is abusing and arresting the very idea of unselfish acts and the meaning of human understanding,” the open letter said.

It also warned of “psychological profiles in which the boundaries of humanity are erased” adding that “no command, nor uniform frees a man from personal choice”.

The letter was released a week ago and has been signed by 630 doctors since. It called for solidarity in the health care system against the scenes of brutal police violence at the September 5 protest in Novi Sad.
