Opposition Democratic Party (DS) leader Srdjan Milivojevic said on Tuesday that the European Union should support the demands made by protesting students. Pročitaj više
Milivojevic’s statement was released a day after the Serbian government instructed its diplomatic staff abroad to inform EU member states of its claim to have met all the student demands.
He added that the EU should unequivocally tell the Serbian authorities that the rule of law is most important condition for membership in the Union. “The regime did not meet the student demands because that would limit its powers. The authorities are denying that there are institutions operating outside the law in Serbia because that would mean the end to political control over the judiciary, education, media and all other aspects of society,” he is quoted as saying.
“If the EU seriously counts on expansion, its key demands can’t be just geopolitical calculation but changes based on the values the students are articulating clearly – rule of law, responsibility of institutions and respect for democratic principles,” he said and added that the demands are a call for Serbia’s European future and for the country to become functional, just and orderly.
