Democratic Party (DS) leader Srdjan Milivojevic called on citizens to defend Serbia’s institutions, constitution, and rule of law against Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic, and urged people to take to the streets en masse on September 1, marking 10 months since the collapse of a canopy at Novi Sad train station, and gather outside the headquarters of what he called “progressive mafia organizations” in cities across the country.

On November 1, 2024, a concrete canopy at the recently renovated Novi Sad main train station collapsed, killing 16 people and severely injuring one.

“We will not allow Aleksandar Vucic to carry out an unimpeded and unpunished attack on Serbia’s constitutional order. In the event of an attack on people fighting against organized crime and corruption, I call on citizens, I ask that we respond with massive street protests,” Milivojevic told reporters outside the Serbian Government building.

He pointed to the example of Romanian citizens who took to the streets to support prosecutor Laura Kovesi, urging Serbians to do the same.

Milivojevic said he does not question the motives or timing of the Prosecutor’s Office for Organized Crime, which recently started arresting former ministers and officials linked to corruption in the construction of the Novi Sad-Subotica-Kelebija high-speed railway, and expressed support for their efforts.

“We fully back the prosecutor’s office in its fight against all elements of organized crime and corruption,” said Milivojevic.
