While Pristina talks about the end of "criminal structures," local Serbs and Belgrade claim it is an attack on the Serbs. Western embassies criticize the move by Prime Minister Albin Kurti’s government. The Kosovo government, through a major police operation, has closed more than 30 offices of the Serbian parallel administration, reports the German public service ARD, pointing out that this happened without a prosecutor's order, as reported by Deutsche Welle.

The operation, which took place on Thursday (January 16), has been met with accusations from Kosovo Serbs that Albin Kurti’s government, just weeks before parliamentary elections, is creating a mood to gain votes from Albanian nationalists, according to the ARD report.

As ARD reminds, Belgrade and Pristina, under the European Union's supervision, agreed to close Serbian institutions but to give Serbs the Community of Municipalities.

This has not yet been implemented.

“It is evident that the Kosovo government has partially decided to bring matters to a fait accompli,” the German public service states.

"Today, we have closed the chapter on illegal criminal Serbian parallel structures," quoted Kosovo's Minister of Internal Affairs, Xhelal Sveçlja.

The European Union condemned the action by the Kosovo authorities, reminding that the issue of Serbian institutions in Kosovo should have been addressed within the framework of dialogue. Kosovo is urged not to take such actions that could lead to escalation.

The statement was supported on the platform X by Germany’s ambassador to Pristina, Jörn Rode. He stated that they fundamentally agree that "these parallel structures should be ended." "But the path to that must be inclusive."

As the ARD correspondent further writes, the action by Pristina shocked the Serbian community, where voices are heard claiming it is "a theatrical performance" by Albin Kurti, but also repression against the Serb people.

Petar Petkovic, director of the Serbian Office for Kosovo and Metohija, said that Kurti clearly does not want dialogue but is seeking to deal with Serbs, and that by closing the institutions, he overnight left 1,100 people without jobs. He added that Belgrade will continue to pay salaries to these people.

ARD also cites a statement from the U.S. embassy, which has frequently criticized Pristina lately.

"By closing Serb institutions, Kosovo acted against U.S. advice and undermined U.S. trust. This could negatively affect Kosovo's aspirations to join the Euro-Atlantic community," the embassy said in a statement.
