Eastern Serbia wildfires under control, ministry says

Internal Affairs Minister Ivica Dacic said the fire between the villages of Velika Kamenica, Podvrska and Velesnica was contained at around 6:40 p.m., after burning an area of about 1,300 hectares. “Wind kept changing direction throughout the day and made firefighting more difficult, but the most important thing now is to prevent any hotspot from reigniting the fire,” Dacic said.

The MUP Emergency Situations Sector said 38 people and 16 vehicles remained at the scene, including 27 emergency services personnel with nine vehicles, along with volunteer firefighters, municipal services and local residents.

A state of emergency was declared in parts of the Kladovo municipality after strong winds caused the fire to spread.
