The European Union would not support anything in Serbia that goes against EU environmental standards, Peter Stano, spokesperson for the European Commission for Foreign Affairs and Security, told N1. However, he stressed that it is up to Serbian authorities to ensure these standards are met and respected. Pročitaj više

As for the issue of Kosovo, Stano expressed concern over the ongoing crisis in the dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina. He criticised unilateral actions, particularly by the Pristina administration, such as the closure of Serbian post offices in northern Kosovo, which he described as unfortunate and harmful to local communities. He called for a return to constructive dialogue.

Stano warned that opening the bridge on the Ibar River, which is seen by the Serb community in the north as a threat, could escalate tensions. The EU, along with other key partners, urged Kosovo’s Prime Minister Kurti not to proceed with unilateral actions, emphasizing that issues should be resolved through dialogue.

Stano stressed that the EU is a mediator, not an enforcer, and it can only facilitate dialogue. He acknowledged that the dialogue has stalled due to a lack of commitment from both sides but pointed out that progress has been made in some areas. He emphasized the importance of local political leadership in achieving necessary compromises.

As for the declining support for EU Integration in Serbia, Stano addressed concerns that the EU wants to turn Serbia into its „dumping ground,“ particularly regarding the lithium project.

He clarified that the EU maintains strict environmental standards and expects Serbia to adhere to them during its EU accession process. He said that the responsibility lies with Serbian authorities to communicate and ensure these standards are met.

Stano also stressed that Serbia must align its foreign policy with the EU before joining, dismissing any notion that this could be postponed until after accession. He urged Serbian authorities to focus on achieving real results rather than delaying the inevitable.
