“We are deeply concerned about the deterioration of the health of Professor Marija Vasic, and we expect that authorities act in a responsible manner and provide her adequate medical treatment,” the Commission said in response to a question from N1.
The European Commission said it is “following the case of Marija Vasic closely.”
“As for all cases, due process is to be ensured. We expect that conditions of detention are compatible with respect for fundamental rights including human dignity,” the EC told N1.

Marija Vasic was arrested along with five other activists from the Movement of Free Citizens (PSG) and the Students Against Authoritarian Government (STAV) organization on charges of allegedly attempting to overthrow the constitutional order. When the activists’ detention was extended for another 30 days for the third time, two months after their arrest, Marija Vasic went on a hunger and thirst strike.
Two days later, on May 15, she was transferred from Novi Sad District Prison to the hospital of the Central Prison in Belgrade due to her deteriorating health condition. That same day, students responded to calls and began blockading the Novi Sad courthouse, which houses both the courts and prosecutor’s offices.
