Retired economics professor Miodrag Zec told N1 the announced increases in the price of goods are a problem that was to be expected and that Serbia’s politicians have not been paying attention to the issue.

"Everyone thought that it wouldn't happen, no laws apply here, but Murphy's does - if something can go wrong, it certainly will, and if someone says it they risk being declared a panic-monger,” he said.

“When a war comes, the whole system is destroyed,” he said, commenting on the inflation as a result of the war in Ukraine.

Zec said that citizens will surely feel the announced gas price increase of 9 percent.

Speaking about the data of the Fiscal Council, which stated that the loss of Public Enterprise Elektroprivreda Serbia (EPS) and Srbijagas in the heating season of 2021/22 is one billion euros, Zec said that the public expects the government to find the money needed.

"The government can't find anything, the government is the body authorised to charge and pay to whomever it deems necessary. What has not been done and what needs to be done urgently is much more important. Even a 100 percent increase will not be enough if nothing is done within the EPS, we cannot manage to solve some issues in the EPS for the past 30 years", he stated.

“If party-controlled enterprises are treated as prey, then you got what was expected, why are we surprised, we are in an unsolvable position. One never anticipates this, everyone only deals with the consequences", Professor Miodrag Zec concluded.
