It is necessary to take drastic measures and keep them in effect up to 14 days in order to stop the virus spread, Serbia's chief epidemiologist and member of the coronavirus crisis staff Predrag Kon told local media.

The virus is all around and it is impossible to stop its spread without introducing drastic measures, he stressed.

According to the latest data, Serbia recorded another 4,668 new coronavirus cases, while 26 deaths were reported among Covid-19 patients.

“We have no choice. We must stop the transmission in a drastic way. We asked for a 5-day full lockdown, then we increased it to seven days as an absolute minimum. Now it is increasing to a minimum of 10-14 days, that's what we said during the crisis staff meeting,” said Kon, adding that the lockdown would not be necessary if the current measures were obeyed “which is not the case.

He also said it was not possible to control “illegal gatherings.”
