Serbian Equality Commissioner Brankica Jankovic said on Monday that most of the complaints her office has been getting are over labor market discrimination.
A statement issued on International Workers’ Day said the complaints are over discrimination based on gender, age, health, handicaps, union and political affiliation.
Jankovic said more complaints came from women, claiming discrimination over pregnancy and from young people not getting adequate employment opportunities causing some to leave the country.
“Concern is also caused by the practice of considering desirable employees to be aged 30 to 45, with a pleasant appearance, health, digitally literate with experience and few private obligations, prepared to work overtime which means that discrimination, insecurity and even poverty are the reality for a large number of working people,” the Commissioner said.
She said a new labor law is needed and has to be in line with European and the standards of the International Labor Organization.
