European Union (EU) Special Representative for the Belgrade-Pristina Dialogue Peter Sorensen paid an unannounced visit to Kosovo on Thursday, where he met with Kosovo’s chief negotiator, Besnik Bislimi.
Following the meeting with Bislimi in Pristina, Sorensen told reporters that his visit was part of his official mandate and announced he would also be traveling to Belgrade, Radio Free Europe reported.
“We’re working, that’s all,” said Sorensen, who took over the role from Miroslav Lajcak on February 1.
Sorensen visited both Pristina and Belgrade in March this year. During that visit, he emphasized that the priority is to ensure regular meetings between Serbian and Kosovo representatives, where it is up to the parties themselves to decide whether they are willing to compromise.
“The dialogue exists to make sure the meetings take place. Whether that leads to compromise or not is up to the parties involved,” Sorensen said at the time.
EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas told RSE in early April that the Belgrade-Pristina dialogue is “stuck because the parties are complaining about each other.”
“We have to keep the end goal in mind – the normalization of their relations, so both sides could proceed on their European path,” said Kallas, adding that this may be achieved through dialogue, or by using “some other tool.”
