European Parliament President Roberta Metsola told a meeting on the Western Balkans on Tuesday that Serbia is lagging behind in terms of aligning with European Union foreign policy.

Speaking in a video statement to the meeting in the Bulgarian capital Sofia, Metsola said that the European Parliament welcomes the fact that the six countries of the Western Balkans condemned the Russian aggression on Ukraine but warned that they need to fully implement the sanctions against Russia. That is what is expected of every country that wants to become an EU member, she said.

Commissioner Oliver Varhelyi told the meeting in Sofia that the European Commission wants to make expansion to the Western Balkans one of its five top priorities, adding that the lesson learned in the region is that the process has to be faster and that effort has to be invested to avoid any conflict in the Western Balkans because it would affect all of Europe. He added that the war in Ukraine showed that there is no time to lose.

She said that a way has to be found to expand the EU to include the Western Balkans. Those countries have been knocking on the door of the EU for too long and both those countries and the EU need a clear sign, she said, adding that all six countries have to work hard on reforms and invest effort to resolve open bilateral issues.
