The European Union has suspended the distribution of Russian media 'Russia Today' and 'Sputnik,' believing they are the Kremlin's tools for disinformation and manipulation of information, Radio Free Europe (RFE) has reported on Wednesday.

According to the EU statement, the sanctions cover all means of transmission and distribution, such as cable, satellite, IPTV, platforms, websites and applications.

„All relevant licenses, authorisations and distribution agreements have been suspended. These measures cover all EU member states and are directly applied,“ it added.

The European Commission (EC) President Ursula von der Layen said that words were significant in the war.

„We are witnessing mass propaganda and disinformation about this unprecedented attack on a free and independent country. We will not allow Kremlin apologists to spread their toxic lies justifying (Russian President Vladimir) Putin’s war or sow the seeds of division in our Union,“ she said.

The EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Joseph Borrell, said Russia manipulated information as an „operational tool“.

„Today, we are taking an essential step against Putin’s manipulation and closing the tap for Russian media in the EU under the control of the state. We have already sanctioned the RT leadership, including the editor-in-chief (Margarita) Simonjan, and it is logical to aim at the activities of our Union, „Borrell said.
