“EULEX is reinforcing its existing Formed Police Unit (FPU) through the temporary deployment of members of the European Gendarmerie Force (EUROGENDFOR) from France, Italy, Lithuania, and Portugal. These Officers will work shoulder to shoulder with the FPU provided by the Polish Police to fulfil the Mission’s mandate of supporting stability throughout Kosovo and ensuring safety for all communities,” a press release said.
It said that the reinforcements will be made up of troopers from the French Gendarmerie Nationale, Italian Carabinieri, Lithuanian Public Security Service, and Portuguese Guarda Nacional Republicana.
The reinforcements are being deployed to meet EULEX’s need for additional forces on the ground in support of its Kosovo counterparts which, the press release said, includes acting as the second security responder.
According to EULEX, this is the 5th deployment of Reserve FPU forces since March 2022.
Elections for the Kosovo Parliament have been scheduled for early in February.
