Nedeljko Savic of the Stig Association from the city of Pozarevac said the farmers presented their demands but that none of them were met and that they are forced to stage protests starting Tuesday.
“Frankly, I am not surprised by the Government’s response. A lot of money is needed to fulfill these (demands) and for agriculture to move forward. We have not been met with understanding by the Government and we will try to draw attention to us with the coming activities,” said Savic.
Following failed negotiations with the Serbian Government the farmers were offered to meet Monday afternoon with the Serbian President, which they refused, head of the Association of Banat Farmers Dragan Kleut told N1.
Asked why they refused a meeting with President Aleksandar Vucic, the farmers said: “What is there for him to offer when the Serbian Prime Minister told us that she cannot meet our demands.”
He explained that the announced protest will at first be organized as a protest ride without causing problems to the citizens.
“We will stand on roadsides, and then stronger measures will follow,” said Savic, inviting all farmers to join the protest.
The farmers are asking for subsidies for agricultural land to be set at 300 euros per hectare, for the abolishing of excise duties and VAT on diesel fuel, for a 40,000 dinar (1 euro – 117 dinars) subsidy per cow, for the guaranteeing of prices of agricultural products and for milk subsidies.
