Serbian farmers rode tractors to Belgrade just after midnight and staged a performance outside the Presidency building, voicing protest over the choice of new agriculture minister.

Djordje Grujic, a farmer from the Vojvodina town of Srbobran and representative of the farmers’ protection Association 2022, told N1 that they came in peace, dissatisfied with their situation and personnel solutions at the Ministry of Agriculture.

The tractors were parked outside the Presidency building at around 1.30 am on Wednesday, following which the police intervened.

Grujic told N1 that poor communication with the relevant authorities is also one of the reasons why they are dissatisfied.

“We want to have a say in who is going to be the agriculture minister, better safe than sorry, we want this in order to avoid appointments of the wrong people based on political decisions. We are not causing disorder, we are just showing seriousness that we are ready to protect the interests of all farmers and that agriculture must have the place that it deserves,” Grujic explained.

“This is a warning, not a threat,” Grujic told N1, adding they received guarantees that a meeting with representatives of the relevant ministry would be organized after the Labor Day and Easter holidays.

Serbian Prime Minister designate Milos Vucevic on Tuesday nominated Aleksandar Martinovic as agriculture minister.
