Two separate groups of farmers met with Serbian Agriculture Minister Aleksandar Martinovic on Monday and came out of their meetings dissatisfied with his response to their demands.

Representatives of seven farmer’s and three cattle farmers associations demanded payment of the subsidies promised them months earlier. The farmers’ association representatives said Martinovic made no promise to fulfill the demands agreed last year with then Prime Minister Ana Brnabic and his predecessor Jelena Tanaskovic. “He said that he has good will,” a spokesman told reporters adding that the minister suggested that they should take part in a public hearing by the parliamentary Agriculture Committee which is due to discuss the budget among other things.

The seven farmers’ associations refused the suggestion saying they will wait for the outcome of the hearing to see if they will get the subsidies for seed.

A spokesman for the cattle farmers’ associations said they want the cattle registered reviewed, a plan for the recovery of the cattle farming industry and higher subsidies for heifers and breeding cows.

“Martinovic only took note of the demands,” the spokesman said.
