Serbian Finance Minister Sinisa Mali told the state TV (RTS) on Wednesday that the government will subsidize housing for young people.
Elaborating on what President Aleksandar Vucic said last week, the Finance Minister said a law would be drafted and passed on to Parliament in January to take effect on March 1, 2025. Vucic told the news conference that was disrupted by protesting students outside the Presidency building that deposits on housing loans for young people would be reduced from 20 to 1 percent.
Mali said this was the government’s most significant program for young people ever and added that Vucic would present its final draft over the weekend.
Vucic said that he is proud of the plan to subsidize housing loans for the young, adding that no other European country has a similar ambitious idea. He added in an Instagram video post that a plan is being drafted to attract Serbians home from other countries along with another project which he did not disclose. Vucic said the video was recorded on a plane to Brussels.
He said installments would be 93 Euro a month the first year of repayment for a 75,000 Euro housing loan, rising to 175 Euro in the 2nd to 6th years and then to 350 Euro till the loan is repaid. The average net monthly salary in Serbia stands at around 95,000 Dinars (1 Euro – 117 Dinars).
