Fire in North Macedonia's COVID hospital claims 14 lives

North Macedonia’s Health Ministry said on Thursday that 14 patients died and 12 were injured in a blaze that engulfed a COVID hospital in the northwestern town of Tetovo.

The fire broke out on Wednesday evening, and the first information was that ten people died, but the authorities said the number could rise.

Twelve out of a total of 26 patients are hospitalised in a Tetovo hospital and are not in life-threatening condition.

Tetovo’s Basic Prosecutors’ Office said it ordered the identification and autopsy of the dead.

Late on Wednesday, ten casualties were reported.

Health Minister Venko Filipce confirmed the number, adding but there could be more fatalities.

The cause of the blast is still unknown.

Tetovo Mayor Teut Arifi said it broke out at great speed and that more details about the number of casualties were still coming from the hospital and the police.
