The Belgrade police told N1 that a brush fire was being tacked in the area around the Serbian capital’s Vinca landfill. Firefighters are reported to have been deployed between the Vinca dump and the Nuclear Science Institute. Pictures of the fire were posted on the Moj Beograd Instagram profile
The Vinca dump covers an area of some 45 hectares with a depth of 5 to 50 meters. Some 600,000 tons of communal and other waste is dumped there annually. The site is located 15 kilometers from central Belgrade close to the banks of the Danube and the village of Vinca. It is reported to be one of the largest open dumps in Europe producing toxic gases. Fires are reported to be frequent at the Vinca landfill.
The second fire is at the Jabuka dump outside the town of Pancevo about 20 kilometers west of Belgrade.
An N1 reporter said that the smoke is visible for kilometers around the dump site and added that most of the village of Jabuka is covered in smoke.
The reporter said no firefighters were visible at the dump on Monday. Fire crews tackled the blaze overnight before withdrawing.
Post on social media showed a huge fire overnight with small blazes in the morning.
The Jabuka landfill is used for all kinds of waste including plastic and organic.
