A former Belgrade City Assembly speaker warned that construction work on the central square in front of parliament was deliberately left uncompleted just days prior to the mass protest on March 15.

Zoran Alimpic told N1 that the uncompleted sidewalk reconstruction poses a risk during next Saturday’s protest. “This will be the site of one of the biggest gathering in the history of Belgrade and Serbia and instead of hurrying to finish the square I have the impression that this is not just incompetence or corruption but that they deliberately moved the deadline to March 16,” he said.

Numerous stone blocks have not been put into place in the square, leaving holes along the edges of the sidewalk. “Leaving a construction site open is a risk for the people who will come and the people already here,” he said.

According to social media, some paving stones have been left unguarded out in the open right next to the tent camp in front of the Serbian Presidency building where regime supporters have been gathering for several days.
