A former Labor and Social Policies Minister warned on Thursday that 10 percent of the poorest in Serbia spend more than half of their income on food.

Gordana Matkovic, a minister in the late Prime Minister Zoran Djindjic’s government, told Belgrade weekly NIN that inflation in September stood at 14 percent but that food prices rose by 21 percent, affecting mainly the poor.

She said salaries have not been raised since 2019 leaving people with less money to survive on and warned that the situation will deteriorate further once fuel prices rise.
