Former Serbian police official Hrkalovic sentenced to jail

Former state secretary at Serbia’s Interior Ministry, Dijana Hrkalovic, has been sentenced to 16 months in prison for protecting criminals and obstructing investigations.
She was indicted with Dejan Milenkovic, the former head of the Special Investigation Methods Service, who was acquitted and Milorad Susnjic, the former Novi Sad police chief, who was sentenced to one year in prison for the same criminal offense.
Hrkalovic was indicted for using her position to obstruct investigations and protect criminals in three separate cases. Media reports accused her of ordering surveillance on top state officials, allegedly with her boss then Interior Minister Nebojsa Stefanovic, a close associate of President Aleksandar Vucic and a senior official of the ruling party.
