Former Serbian President and leader of the Social Democratic Party, Boris Tadic, stated that “Serbia is facing a very specific situation in which the government has already overthrown the constitutional order, while the citizens have already declared a state of emergency themselves.”

“Whether and when (Serbian President Aleksandar) Vucic will formally declare a state of emergency, I think, is no longer even relevant,” Tadic said in an interview with Danas on Saturday.

He said that Vucic “simply finds himself in the phase that every autocrat faces at the end of their rule.”

“That phase is always marked by desperate moves and resorting to violence, as well as a hysterical daily change of narrative. One day he threatens, the next day he ‘fatherly’ begs,” Tadic observed.

He emphasized that “calling elections is absolutely the only solution to get out of this crisis.”

“The fact that this regime, which has called elections almost every year, is now running away from them clearly shows they know what would happen if they went to the polls,” Tadic said.

He warned that “literally every day they delay calling elections plunges the country deeper into crisis and risks the safety of the country and the lives of its citizens.”

“It’s absurd for the regime to call for an end to the blockades while refusing to hold elections, which is the only thing that would calm the situation in the country. So, it is the regime that is creating this atmosphere by not calling elections — not the students and the citizens,” Tadic stressed.
