The Women in Black, Autonomous Women’s Center and Youth Initiative for Human Rights organized the Remembering Women Raped in War in Belgrade’s central Republic Square to show solidarity with all women and girls who fell victim to sexual violence both during the Yugoslav wars of the 1990s and in conflicts across the world.
The protesters carried banners calling for an end to sexual violence in war and recalling that Serb armed formations committed the largest number of rapes in war as well as the fact that Serbian laws do not recognize women raped in war as civilian war victims. They also displayed a map of sexual war crimes in the former Yugoslavia.
