The Serbian Genocide Victims’ Museum on Monday condemned the destruction of a memorial at the site where the synagogue once stood in the city of Sremska Mitrovica.

A statement condemned the destruction of the memorial as an “act of vandalism and anti-semitism”. The memorial was put up on April 5 this year at the site of the temple which was destroyed in 1941.

“This act by irresponsible individuals is especially worrying bearing in mind the recent 80th anniversary of the mass arrests and killings of a large number of Jews in the Srem area and the 80th anniversary of the mass Croatian crimes against Serbs, Jews and Roma in Srema (the so-called Viktor Tomic operation),” the statement said.

It said that the act of vandalism was directed not only against Jews but against Serbs and everyone else living in Serbia. The statement said that the Sremska Mitrovica city authorities should restore the memorial immediately and that the vandals should be identified and brought to justice.
