NATO Deputy Secretary General Mircea Geoana said that NATO sees no signs that the situation in northern Kosovo, in other parts of Kosovo or in the wider region in general could escalate.

In an interview with the KoSSev news portal Geoana said that the Alliance fully supports the Belgrade-Pristina dialogue and noted that the only way forward for both sides is through dialogue and compromise.

KFOR is carrying out its mandate in Kosovo under the UN Security Council Resolution 1244, said Geoana, adding that the situation in Kosovo is fragile but stable.

When it comes to the Kosovo Security Forces, we always say that we should be abiding by the UN Security Council Resolution 1244, which clearly says that any move eventually toward the north should not be done before consulting with the KFOR commander. This is the message that we sent to all the decision-makers in Pristina as we visited today, Geoana said.

Geoana called Serbia a partner of NATO with whom the Alliance does a lot of work “despite some difficult moments in the past”.

Serbia is NATO’s partner, we respect Belgrade’s decisions and we can only hope that European perspective will become reality for Serbia, said Geoana.
