German Ambassador to Serbia Anke Konrad said that lithium is crucial for the green transition in reducing the climate impact of the transportation sector, and that this resource “has to be available.”
The importance of lithium is quite significant. The upcoming project and the quantity of lithium that can be produced (at the German facility in Upper Rhine) can be compared to lithium deposits in Serbia, the ambassador told the daily Blic, adding that this is important to Germany because it needs lithium.
She explained that, in Germany, regardless of the established market chains and contracts with car manufacturers such as Volkswagen and Renault, the highest mining standards are important, and added that Europe must not allow itself to be “dependent on a small number of sources.”
Economic benefits of lithium extraction are obvious and they are linked to the protection of the environment and resources, to adapting to climate change, said Korad, adding that it is therefore crucial that equivalent standards can be applied in Serbia, with all stakeholders engaged in environmental issues.
The German ambassador emphasized the importance of setting standards also across supply chains, spanning from mining and battery production to automobile manufacturing.
