"The Olympic torch, unfortunately, only briefly illuminated humanity but failed to ignite a lasting flame of peace in these complex and specific times," said Alexander Popov from the Center for Regionalism in an interview with N1. He emphasized the challenging context of the Games, marked by the COVID-19 pandemic, the war in Ukraine, the Gaza conflict, and climate change impacts.

Popov expressed disappointment with domestic officials regarding lithium mining, stating that their actions were expected but deeply disheartening for those who believe in the EU and Serbia's European integration. "Local officials did not disappoint because their behaviour was anticipated. However, it's profoundly disappointing for everyone who believes in the EU and Serbia's integration," he noted.

Discussing the current global scenario, Popov highlighted the erosion of values built post-Cold War, particularly in the West. "We've always had wars, but the current situation suggests a significant realignment of the world. Current leaders seem unable to manage these crises and create an atmosphere of peace," he said.

Popov criticized the media coverage of lithium mining as "completely disappointing," reflecting on the lack of genuine progress and the perceived betrayal of the people. "It's disheartening, but not unexpected. The temporary halt of the lithium mining project was anticipated. The real disappointment lies with those who believed in the EU and hoped for genuine progress," he stated.

He condemned the double standards applied by European leaders, accusing them of prioritizing their interests over the rule of law and anti-corruption measures in Serbia. "Germany is saving its economy at our expense, exploiting our resources with minimal regard for standards. This makes us feel like a European colony," he remarked.

Popov concluded by highlighting the decline in EU support among Serbians, attributing it to perceived hypocrisy. "The hypocrisy was unexpected, and it's leading to a decline in EU support," he said.
