The Go-Change movement submitted objections to the spatial plan for the Sava River waterfront project known as “Belgrade Waterfront,” citing serious concerns about the protection of cultural heritage and the environment.
An “early public hearing” is currently under way at the Serbian Agency for Spatial Planning, and along with these objections, a petition against the demolition of the Belgrade Fairgrounds, which has collected 33,860 signatures last September, has also been submitted.
According to the objections, “The expansion of the Belgrade Waterfront project, which involves demolishing existing structures and building new ones, could further damage the environment.”
Increased air pollution and a rise in temperatures are highlighted as potential issues.
Speaking for Go-Change, architect Angelina Jokic noted that the plan includes the construction of high-rise buildings between 80 and 120 meters tall.
“Imagine a huge wall along the riverbank blocking the air that should cool the city,” she said.
Jokic also pointed out that the Belgrade Fairgrounds has significant cultural and historical value and must be preserved.
