Serbian Culture Minister Maja Gojkovic said that the Serbian people understand the “dark chasm” that created fascism and is committed to a culture of remembrance.

Speaking at ceremony on International Anti-Fascism and Antisemitism Day, Gojkovic said a culture of remembrance is among the top priorities of the government. She recalled the suffering of the Serbs under fascism and “the horror of genocide which they were subjected to”. “There isn’t a week or month that we do not come together to mark the suffering of our own and other peoples we suffered with,” she said.

According to Gojkovic, Serbs in Kosovo are subject to “the harshest discrimination and suffering”… which is why our fight against anti-fascism and antisemitism could never be just a phrase or idea but is deeply intertwined in the way we understand dignified life, a value no one can take from us”. She said that the evil can only be destroyed through mutual understanding, solidarity and respect.

Gojkovic is a senior official of the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) and was formerly a senior member of the ultra-nationalist Serbian Radical Party (SRS) in the 1990s.
