The Serbian police arrested 21 hooligans for assaults on the police during EuroPride on September 17, a press release said on Monday.

The Internal Affairs Ministry (MUP) press release said that the group of hooligans were arrested on suspicion of assaulting and injuring 12 police officers and causing more than 2 million Dinars (1 Euro – 117 Dinars) in damages. They were part of a larger group that assaulted a police cordon on the street in front of the St Sava Temple where EuroPride opponents were gathering prior to the pride parade.

Internal Affairs Minister Aleksandar Vulin is quoted as saying that violence will not be tolerated, adding that people who take to the streets with clubs and torches are there to assault the police. “Think about the consequences before you attack the police. As long as I am minister no one will assault the police with impunity,” he said.

The police also searched 10 sites and found torches, clubs, knives, firearms, drugs and other illegal things.
