Serbian Health Minister Zlatibor Loncar said on Monday that an experimental drug developed by Pfizer will be available in Serbia to help combat the coronavirus pandemic.

Loncar told the Serbian state TV (RTS) that the drug, which he did not name, reduces the risk of hospitalization and death by 89 percent in patients whose health has been compromised. He added that a contract was signed with Pfizer to bring the drug to Serbia.

According to the minister, Serbia is the third country to sign a contract for the drug which blocks the enzyme that the coronavirus uses to reproduce. “We will be the first to get the drug,” he said.

Loncar said that vaccination is the primary tool to fight the pandemic, adding that the battle is not to cure people who are diseased by to prevent infection. “We are doing this for one reason only – to save lives not to experiment,” he said.
