Helsinki Committee: CRTA one of most threatened civil society organizations

The NGO Helsinki Committee for Human Rights in Serbia said the state officials’ attacks against the Center for Research, Transparency and Accountability (CRTA) have the characteristics of “a dangerous, organized and continuous campaign, aimed at discrediting and shutting down this organization,” which is why CRTA is one of the most threatened civil society organizations in Serbia.

“The reason for the latest campaign against CRTA, which has been going on for weeks, is a credible and professional report on the elections held on December 17 last year, which points to electoral engineering and serious irregularities,” said the Helsinki Committee.
The Committee said the greatest responsibility for the campaign lies with Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic, as the most influential state official, because “not only is he failing to condemn the attacks by his party’s (Serbian Progressive Party, SNS) officials, but he has also joined in on the campaign to disqualify CRTA as a foreign mercenary.”
According to international standards for the protection of human rights defenders, this campaign is dangerous because it is being conducted continuously for various reasons over a period of several years, the Committee added.
The Helsinki Committee said the latest attacks make CRTA “one of the most threatened civil society organization in Serbia,” but are also a warning to the entire civil sector.
