US Ambassador to Serbia Christopher Hill said that potential US sanctions against the Serbian Oil Industry (NIS) are not intended to harm the Serbian economy in any way.

Sanctions will not do anything that would, in any form or manner, cause damage the Serbian economy. We will carefully review all issues with the Serbian Government to ensure that there is absolutely no harm to Serbia. That is not the point, and it certainly will not be the outcome, Hill told reporters in Belgrade.

Hill revealed that he has already engaged in discussions with Serbian officials regarding the potential sanctions on NIS and that these conversations will continue.

The ambassador reiterated that he could not confirm the introduction of American sanctions against NIS but expressed significant concern over the benefits Russia has gained since acquiring NIS, particularly since the onset of the war in Ukraine.

Hill said that Russia has not invested anything in Serbia or done anything for the Serbian economy.
