How probable is Trump's idea to send migrants to Serbia?

The world is reacting with alarm to a reported plan by U.S. President Donald Trump to deport nearly half a million migrants—some potentially to Serbia. According to Bloomberg, migrants from Venezuela, Cuba, Haiti, and other countries may be forcibly removed under a Trump administration proposal. Serbian authorities have not responded publicly.

Sources told N1 the plan would constitute a serious breach of international human rights standards, though they caution that under Trump, even unlikely scenarios can become reality.
“This move appears aimed at bypassing legal challenges and deporting large numbers of migrants to satisfy Trump’s voter base,” said Dragoslav Raseta of Novi treci put. He explained that the plan also serves as a warning to future migrants: if they enter the U.S. without status, they could be sent anywhere, potentially to countries they’ve never heard of.
Legal experts are deeply sceptical. Human rights lawyer Nikola Kovacevic believes the plan would collapse in court. “It would be an extreme violation of international conventions,” he said. “Serbia hasn’t issued more than one asylum in 2025 so far, and the asylum system is barely functioning.”

Kovacevic noted that Serbia already hosts many refugees in places like Krnjaca, Obrenovac, and Sjenica. “If Serbia wants to help, it can start with those already here,” he said.
While the legal and ethical issues are significant, political analysts warn Trump could attempt to strike transactional deals with countries like Serbia. “Trump’s diplomacy is based on give-and-take,” said Raseta. “In return, Serbia could expect looser U.S. policy on secondary sanctions against Russia, more American investments, or a milder stance on Kosovo.”
Major international organisations, including the UN and Human Rights Watch, have condemned Trump’s proposed migrant expulsions. The U.S. State Department has not commented directly but told Radio Free Europe that Balkan countries are part of broader discussions on deportations.
that Serbian officials have so far remained silent.
