Since the Serbian Government and Parliament have failed to meet the demands of the education workers’ October 13 slowdown, members of the Serbian Education Workers’ Independent Union (NSPRS) are initiating the second phase of their slowdown by awarding every student an A grade, the Union said on Monday.

If their demands are still not met by the end of the semester, the A grade will form the basis for final grade calculations, regardless of other grades given through normal assessment methods, said the Union in a press release.

It noted that their demands include legislative changes to enhance school safety by guaranteeing more effective legal protection for teachers against attacks, allowing immediate suspension of students who exhibit extremely inappropriate behavior, and abolishing anonymous complaints to the education inspectorate.

“Political will of the Ministry of Education, Government and Parliament is all that is required for the adoption of these demands. Adoption and enforcement of amended regulations would not cost the state a single dinar,” the union emphasized, adding that grades are not the root cause of attacks on teachers, but are often the most common trigger.
