Internal Affairs Ministry: 514 traffic fatalities in 2024, prevention is essential
The Serbian Traffic Police said Wednesday that they will be conducting a series of preventive activities across the country through April 27 to raise awareness about the importance of road safety, and noted that 514 people lost their lives in traffic accidents in Serbia in 2024.
These preventive efforts will be carried out in cooperation with schools, healthcare institutions, and other organizations.
The main focus will be on educating the public about the importance of obeying speed limits, wearing seat belts, and the dangers of driving under the influence of alcohol, the Serbian Internal Affairs Ministry (MUP) said.
Of the 514 fatalities, nearly half were pedestrians, cyclists, or motorcyclists, while one in four people who died in traffic accidents last year was under the age of 30, and 16 of the victims were children, the MUP said.
According to the World Health Organization, traffic accidents are the leading cause of death and serious injury among children and young people under the age of 24, the statement added.
