JCC members to N1: Serbia is not a democracy

JCC co-chair Bosko Savkovic told N1 in Brussels that Serbia isn’t a democracy under the current regime. “With these authorities, as they are, we will not be a democracy for sure and until the entire system is dismantled we can’t be a democracy worthy of the European Union,” he said.

He said the JCC meeting expressed serious doubts about Serbian society being at all democratic.

Prosecutor Goran Ilic told N1 that the adopting of the judiciary laws which critics say limit the work of prosecutors took Serbia a serious step backwards following what he said was a successful constitutional and legislative reform of the judiciary in line with European standards. “Those laws, except for one solution, are a serious step back and many of the things that were assessed to be positive during the constitutional and legislative reform are, in my opinion, in doubt,” he said and added that he expects the Venice Commission to pass a negative assessment on the laws.

A day earlier, the JCC adopted a declaration expressing concern over the electoral environment in Serbia and condemning the violence at Sunday's local elections in 10 municipalities.
