The SafeJournalists network, its member the Independent Journalists’ Association of Serbia (NUNS), and the Journalists’ Association of Serbia (UNS) condemned the threats against N1 journalists made in the comments section on the N1 website.
The Journalists’ Association of Serbia (UNS) called Friday on the relevant authorities to identify and punish those responsible for the threats made against N1 journalists following the publication of an article on Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic's visit to the United States in connection with the UN Security Council session on Kosovo.
The Independent Journalists’ Association of Serbia (NUNS) also called for an urgent reaction of the relevant institutions, and the SafeJournalists network, representing media professionals in the Western Balkans, joined its member NUNS, urging the authorities to promptly identify and sanction the person who made the threats, and so send a clear message that they are standing up to protect journalists.
The SafeJournalists will inform relevant national and international stakeholders, as every attack on journalists is an attack on the public interest, democracy, and the rights of all citizens, said this network.
N1 Program Director Igor Bozic told the UNS that the N1 news desk on Thursday received threats in the comments section of a video report and article on the Serbian President's visit to the US for the UN Security Council session on Kosovo.
Bozic said N1 journalists were told that they “would soon be liquidated, neutralized, and that nothing would be left of them.” They were referred to as “the worst gang,” “traitors paid by foreign powers,” while the comment also read that they “have long been publicly speaking out against the Serbian people and government.”
The comment said that “there are more villains”, and also mentioned the Nova S and Danas media outlets, said Bozic, adding that the threats were immediately reported to the Special Prosecutor’s Office for High-Tech Crime.
Bozic said the Prosecutor’s Office contacted N1 and said it is undertaking action in connection with the reported threats. “This is not the first time that the N1 news desk has received such threats, there was a similar incident a few weeks ago when we published a story on the discovery of a marijuana plantation in northern Kosovo. We informed the Prosecutor's Office at that time as well, but we have not received any feedback to this day,” said Bozic.
He added that the N1 website moderators noticed the comments that were posted on Thursday evening, but that they were not published.
The Journalists’ Association of Serbia (UNS) called on the Prosecutor’s Office for High-Tech Crime to take the death threats received by N1 journalists seriously and swiftly find those responsible, stressing that intimidation and treats against journalists are unacceptable and that perpetrators of such verbal attacks must be held accountable.
