Jovan Rajic criticizes presidential involvement and handling of Novi Sad tragedy

Legal expert Jovan Rajic from the RERI organization expressed sharp criticism of Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic's comments on safety measures at public buildings, following the recent incident at the Novi Sad train station that resulted in 14 deaths. Speaking to N1, Rajic highlighted systemic issues in rule of law and corruption, calling them the root causes of Serbia’s problems. He argued that the President has no jurisdiction in assessing building safety and accused Vucic of trying to manipulate public perception.
Rajic clarified that there is no such thing as a "temporary permit" for a building, but rather a "trial operation" phase, during which a structure undergoes testing to ensure safety and stability, as mandated by Article 157 of the Construction and Planning Law. “Allowing public access during this trial phase without completing all tests proved to be extremely dangerous, and someone must face serious criminal accountability for this,” he added.
In discussing the lack of transparency surrounding the investigation, Rajic noted the delayed information release as concerning, stating that within three days it is impossible to thoroughly interview and cross-reference statements from 70 witnesses. He stressed that prosecutorial authorities in Novi Sad, or even Chief Prosecutor Zagorka Dolovac, should have updated the public daily on the progress of the investigation.
Rajic also condemned the quick removal of evidence from the scene, a decision defended by Interior Minister Ivica Dacic. He compared it to typical traffic accident protocols, where vehicles remain untouched until an investigation is completed. “This tragedy was far greater than any accident, claiming 14 lives, and I want to know why the evidence was removed so hastily,” he asked.
Commenting on arrests during a recent protest in Novi Sad, Rajic raised concerns about selective law enforcement. He criticized the lack of uniformed police presence and alleged that some detentions were carried out by unofficial forces, drawing a line between public police and what he described as a "private SNS police" enforcing the ruling party’s interests. Rajic’s remarks underscore calls for transparency and accountability in both the Novi Sad tragedy investigation and broader governance issues in Serbia.
