Civil court section judges have 3,000 active cases each, Belgrade Higher Court President Aleksandar Stepanovic told Belgrade daily Politika.
He said that the civil court section has 75,000 ongoing cases which means that plaintiffs face waits of years before final rulings. Stepanovic said that the “chronic burden” at that court is caused by “systemic problems caused by the wide-ranging jurisdiction of the Higher Court”.
According to Stepanovic, the number of cases in the Higher Court’s anti-corruption section is rising constantly but that corruption trials are scheduled within a reasonable time frame of about 40 days.
He said that he warned the head of the Supreme Court of Cassation about the problem but received no reply.
