Serbian Justice Minister Nenad Vujic said that the government is prepared to amend the recently adopted set of judiciary laws if the Venice Commission says they run counter to its standards.

The Serbian government asked the Venice Commission for its opinion on the laws which have met with fierce criticism from the European Commission and Serbian opposition, lawyers and prosecutors. “We do not see the Venice Commission as a court set to rule but as a partner whose expert analysis will show whether certain changes are within its standards,” he said.

According to Vujic, the main objection voiced during his recent meetings with European Commission officials in Brussels were in principle that is that there was no inclusive debate. He added that he asked EU officials why they think the laws will affect the independence of courts and prosecutors and allegedly got no answer.
