Kokanovic: Vucic made a deal with EU, trading Jadar for his political survival
An activist and resident of Gornje Nedeljice village, where a lithium mine is planned to open, told N1 that Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic’s visit to the European Union (EU) a month ago was a trade-off to secure his hold on power.

“Vucic’s visit to the European Union a month ago was a deal for his stay in power. He offered up the Jadar project to be designated as a strategic project,” Zlatko Kokanovic told N1, commenting on the European Commission’s decision to declare the Jadar project a strategic project outside the EU.
He vowed that local residents will stand their ground to the end and defend their land using “all permitted and prohibited means at their disposal.”

“I want to tell them they would be wiser not to try anything, because it will only accelerate the downfall of the Serbian Progressive Party. They are the only ones who are Rio Tinto’s closest advocates,” Kokanovic said.
Kokanovic recalled that citizens are overwhelmingly opposed to the lithium mine in Serbia, and that the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts (SANU) has also spoken out against it. He added that Europe has taken off the gloves and shown it is not a civilized lady, but simply looking out for its own interests and profit.
