Kolubara miners called to protest over demands

Workers at the Kolubara mines have been called to a protest on August 6 over failure to meet demands made to the Mining and Energy Ministry, their CEO and the national power company (EPS) union.
The Kolubara mines are a major part of the Serbian electricity-production system which is based on coal powered plants. Kolubara, just outside Belgrade, is owned by the EPS.
The Jedinstvo Kolubara Working Body called for the protest after the deadline to meet its three-demand ultimatum expired on Thursday. Those demands include access to bank accounts used for solidarity funds and resolving legitimacy issues for their unions. The protest is scheduled to be held on Miners’ Day in Lazarevac.
Miners at Kolubara staged a strike just a few days before the October 5, 2000 protest that toppled the Milosevic regime.
